Raison D'Etre

About a decade ago, my beloved stepmother, Marty Clark Kampf, knew that her time was limited after a lengthy bout with ovarian cancer. When the time came, she chose to leave behind aggressive treatment and focus instead on the quality of whatever time she had left; she became a hospice patient.

Not unrelatedly, three years ago, I accepted a job as Manager of Volunteer and Outreach Services with the Visiting Nurse Association Hospice.

By the end of my first day, I knew that my life would never be the same.

By the end of the first week, I knew that the people with whom I was sharing these quality of life at the end of life journeys would enrich my existence more than I would theirs.

And by the beginning of this year, I knew I wanted to share some of my experiences and stories, celebrating, honoring and remembering the amazing journeys I get to share.

That's why we're here today, that's the "raison d'etre" (reason for being) for this blog.

I hope that in these stories you, too, will find inspiration, hope and challenge.
